About the Position: 

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director of Human Resources is a strategic and visionary thinker that provides leadership for the design, implementation, and evaluation of all human resources functions.  The ideal candidate will bring a strategic mindset; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and a passion for creating exceptional employee experiences and a healthy organizational culture. CALM seeks a thoughtful, communicative, and effective leader who can solve complex issues, build strong relationships, and use technology and analytics to develop data-driven insights that improve HR practice. As a member of the Executive Team, the Director of Human Resources assumes a strategic leadership role in CALM’s long-range vision and operational management.


Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

· Plan, implement, evaluate, and administer all Human Resources strategies and programs, including employment management (leaves, unemployment, workers compensation, etc.), staff recruitment and retention, benefits, compensation, employee relations, and shared services.

· Consult with, provide feedback, and serve as a direct resource to the CEO and Executive Team on employment matters; serve as a strategic partner to management staff regarding staffing and performance management issues; ensure effective communication about personnel matters.

· Coach, mentor and advise CALM managers in resolving complex matters, including employee relations issues, in an equitable manner compliant with CALM values, legal regulations, and general business practices.

· Develop and direct a dynamic talent acquisition program to recruit and onboard the highest level of qualified staff with the skills and values to meet CALM’s mission and operational needs.  

· Implement and direct a competitive, cost-effective benefits program that supports recruitment and retention. Evaluate, analyze and make recommendations for changes in benefit structure, plans or providers.

· Implement employee retention strategies that build on organizational strengths, respond to workforce trends, and equip managers to take ownership and accountability for engagement of their teams.

· Implement and oversee staff wellness programs. Plan, evaluate and participate in Countywide staff development efforts.

· Direct the performance management process, providing managers guidance on documentation, coaching, and performance improvement plans.

· Promote an organizational culture that embraces diversity, equity, inclusiveness, and the fair and respectful treatment of all persons as a core value.  

· Stay current on and ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies and State and Federal law related to HR personnel policies, procedures, record keeping and activities. Ensure managers are informed of and competent in all relevant HR compliance.

Education and/or Experience

· Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Human Resources or related field from a four-year accredited college or university required. 

· Professional certification in Human Resource Management, highly desirable.

· At least 5-7 years of progressive Human Resources managerial experience; experience or familiarity with non-profit setting preferred. 

· Demonstrated knowledge of current California employment laws, including but not limited to ADA, FMLA, CFRA and PDL.


· Strong commitment to CALM’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.

· Must have respect for confidentiality; ability to work with discretion and integrity. 

· Strong computer skills, including Microsoft office and web-based systems. Proficient in use of Zoom. Able to adapt to using various types of software.     

· Possess the knowledge and ability to train others about human resources functions.

· Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, communicate policy interpretations and decisions effectively, and act as an effective mediator as needed.

· Proven skills in problem-solving and decision making with integrity.

· Able to work independently and as a team member.

· Possess initiative and ability to take decisive action.

· Able to respond to inquiries or complaints from staff, volunteers, partner/regulatory agencies, or members of the community.

· Able to perform at a high level in a fast-paced team environment and manage multiple projects to meet timelines, without compromising accuracy, attention to detail or courtesy to clients and staff.

· Able to provide feedback to staff in a constructive manner. 

· Strong organizational skills.

· Self-aware and self-motivated.

· Willing and able to travel to all CALM offices and attend outside meetings as needed.

· Must have a valid driver’s license, clean DMV record and criminal record clearance from the DOJ.
